Modern Extension & Refurbishment of a 1930s House

Location: Kent
Architect: Matthew Kettle
Architecture: Refurbishment and Extension

Bringing a 1930s house into the 21st century is no mean feat. This refurbishment and single-storey extension completely reimagines the dated, compartmentalised layout of the old bungalow, transforming it into a modern, light-filled, open-plan home. The contemporary design emphasises a seamless connection with nature, incorporating natural materials and large glazed areas for extensive views to the garden.

Open to the sky and the elements, the new atrium at the core of the house articulates the surrounding spaces and brings natural light and ventilation deep into the home, creating a connected and open interior. At the centre of the atrium, a slender acer tree introduces a delicate natural focal point. Changing with the seasons, it brings warmth, colour, and life to the heart of the house.

The new extension houses the living spaces: the vaulted kitchen and dining are flooded with natural light even on the rainiest of autumn days, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere year-round. A small mezzanine overlooks both the garden and the central atrium, creating a sense of openness and connection between spaces. Designed as a hobby area, it provides a quiet retreat while maintaining visual links with the rest of the home.

The design relies on simple volumes and shapes, with carefully selected natural materials, thoughtfully combined to create a contemporary and tactile aesthetic. The exterior is defined by Yakisugi / Shou Sugi Ban charred timber cladding with a deep, textured surface. Timber-framed windows with aluminium cladding balance warmth and resilience, while the roof is covered in black-painted clay tiles to complement the timber for a clean, cohesive look.
