Modular Studio

Location: West Malling, Kent
Architect: Matthew Kettle
Architecture: Garden annex and home office

Our client’s brief was to create an escape from the main house. It was to be versatile and modern, serving as a home office and additional accommodation for guests. The existing listed cottage was restricted in height and space. And although we secured planning for a very modern addition to the cottage, the client required an independent solution for the growing family needs.

To achieve the desired height for a cosy mezzanine within the studio/annex, the roof features a bold and distinctive mono-pitched slope, giving it a contemporary and eye-catching appearance. Covered with a sedum green roof to enhance its modern aesthetic and environmental sustainability, the studio blends into the mature landscape.

Large Scandinavian windows and sliding glass doors are strategically placed within the natural black thermowood cladding to maximize natural light, provide excellent views of the garden, and create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.
