Architecture: Conversion of old stables into new house
Converting a cluster of old stables into a contemporary home can be a unique and exciting architectural project that combines historical charm with modern design elements, resulting in a distinctive and stylish living space.
Having lived next door in a grade two listed property, the client wanted to transform the structure of their old stables into a bright and warm home. It was important to carefully plan and execute the transformation to achieve the desired aesthetic and functionality. Our vision to convert and upcycle this run-down equestrian complex enabled us to explore options for a new single storey house. The existing footprint was adequate to accommodate 4 bedrooms, a home office, two reception rooms and 4 bathrooms. Some of the volumes were linked together with a flat roofed entrance and utility room, while one of the stables was converted into a detached garage with storage above.
New pitched roofs form an assortment of imposing gables, and a modern, sharp look was achieved by utilising flush, integrated gutters instead of traditional overhangs. External blockwork walls clad in western red cedar run up to and meet the natural slate roof. The wall construction comprises modular insulated panels fabricated onsite, with steel frames integrated within the envelope. Fantastic views across the fields are framed with Scandinavian tripled glazed windows. The building design allows one to sense a great degree of openness, while creating small cozy courtyards, thus maintaining a sense of privacy from the surrounding countryside.
It is advisable to work with architects, interior designers, and contractors experienced in renovating historic structures. We can help navigate the unique challenges of converting old stables into a contemporary home while adhering to local planning constraints and current building regulations.
