We are pleased to provide an update on our ongoing work at The Metropole, Folkestone, one of the town’s most recognisable and architecturally significant buildings.
Following our appointment to support the conversion of a former nursery unit into a new physiotherapy centre serving the South East, the project has now reached a significant milestone with Detailed Building Control Approval successfully secured and the tender process completed, allowing the project to move confidently towards construction.
As part of the approval process, extensive technical and compliance work has been undertaken to address the unique challenges associated with working within a listed building that is also classified as a High-Rise Residential Building. This has included the preparation of a comprehensive fire strategy, detailed fire risk assessments, accessibility reviews, and the coordination of specialist design information required to satisfy current Building Regulations and Building Safety requirements.
A key element of the project has been the development of a fully coordinated building services design package by ECO-MEP of Ashford, whose team has provided mechanical, electrical and public health engineering solutions not only for the physiotherapy facility but as part of a wider coordinated strategy for the building.
The design approach has focused on carefully integrating modern healthcare requirements within the existing historic fabric, ensuring that the character and significance of The Metropole are preserved while creating a high-quality environment for future occupiers and visitors.
With contractor tenders now secured and the technical design completed, the project is well positioned to progress into the construction phase. We are proud to be contributing to the continued evolution of this iconic Folkestone landmark, bringing a vacant space back into productive use while supporting the long-term future of one of the town’s most important heritage assets.
This project continues to demonstrate the value of careful planning, technical coordination, and specialist expertise when adapting historic buildings to meet modern standards and expectations.
